Stephen's make-up for this film was and remains one of the most layered I've ever done. Firstly a 'comb-over' was required, so Stephen allowed me to shave his head and use a thin little toupe to make the comb-over. Secondly his character required Eczema which had to be done with flakey skin and redness because the flakiness disappeared in the perspiration effect caused by the heat of the hotel. Thirdly the character applied his mother's make-up over his dreadful skin. During the denouement when the character was running deranged from room to room I got the comb-over to gradually creep across his head in a deranged manner. Finally, all this was covered in coal dust when trying to kill his brother with a ton of coal. When filming these final sequences the make-up was done layer by layer and I always used to work to the soundtrack of "Blade Runner", it's how I timed myself.
Stephen delighted in telling me one day that one of the Costume Department had commented on how his skin looked sore and wondered if she could offer him some cream for it. He was very amused and had to tell her it was make-up and his skin was fine.
